Spring Steel Chisel

What is it?

http://www.fao.org/docrep/X5567E/x5567e05.htm#TopOfPage

Spring steel is very hard and will keep sharp for a long time but only if it is kept cool while being worked. A large weight needs to be added to the spring steel to give a heavy hit. The above picture shows two ways this has been successfully done in the past. Some more detail can be found in section 4.5 on the UN FAO website

Good Things

  • Simple
  • Easy to find the materials

Bad Things

  • Spring steel can come loose of the weight.
  • The pictures shown are not as heavy as they could be if a solid round shaft was used instead

Your Ideas

Use a solid shaft instead of the 'I' beam or pipe shown above so that it is as heavy as possible. It may be difficult and expensive to find but an old truck drive shaft could work.
