Cast Pistons

What is it?


The above pistons are made out of melted plastic that is simply poured into a simple mould. the mould can be made out of metal or wood as described in this document and the below diagram.


Good Things

  • Very simple to make
  • Materials and manufacturing technique widely available
  • Reasonable tolerances can be achieved with this method

Bad Things

  • As the plastic is not pressurised the plastic is not as strong
  • As the plastic is not pressurised the plastic can develop air bubbles that roughen the surface create excessive wear
  • If wooden moulds are used the surface is also rough again causing excessive wear
