Ludo Electrically Heated Injection Moulded Pistons

What is it?

The above picture shows a simple injection moulder similar to that produced by Ludo Engineering and described on the Ludo Mk2 Injection Moulded Pistons page. This device is was produced in Columbia. It has been made using mild steel and a electric stove element to allow it to be heated electrically, this dramatically reduces the operational costs.

Good Things

  • Makes pistons to very accurate dimensions
  • Low cost to make
  • Simple to use and repair
  • Ludo Engineering can produce the moulds on mail order
  • Relatively low cost to run
  • Electricity is more readily available than oxy-acetylene

Bad Things

  • Care is need to make sure the plastic reaches the correct temperature to produce a strong final piston
  • May be slower to heat than oxy-acetylene slowing the speed of production
  • Moulds must be made on a lathe which are generally only available in large cities
