Stiff Plastic Rope

What is it?

Stiff plastic rope is the most common and lowest cost rope that you can find almost anywhere in the world. The rope consists of a number of single strands of plastic tread about 0.5mm in diameter all twisted in the same direction, first the twist creates three or more bundles of threads which in turn twist around each other in the same direction to create the rope

Good Things

  • Low cost
  • Easily available
  • Does not rot

Bad Things

  • It can wear faster than other ropes and therefore not last as long
  • It is a little smoother than some other ropes and therefore has more of a chance of slipping over the pulley wheel if the pulley is not made correctly (see pulley for more details)
  • A slightly larger rope is needed (6mm for 20mm pipe) which reduces the efficiency of the pump
